“Bloggin’ from Bangladesh” online

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

Greetings everyone,

I hope this message finds you all well! As promised, here is the second in my series of monthly updates.

In a nutshell, I’ve been battered by Bengali language, perturbed by poverty, rabbled-roused by Ramadan and pissed off by political protests—and yes, in that order. Nonetheless, I’m feeling more settled than when I first got here and I can safely say that it is going well, although the need to stay aware of the dangers of political instability is omnipresent and will be for the next few months. Why? See below.

For those of you who are more photography-minded and less interested in my reams of text, head to my site at and you’ll see the link to my photo albums on the right. Hope you enjoy the pictures-they are meant especially for all of you who have decided to keep in touch with me. Thank you all again for your support—it means the world to me and it will mean more to all the people whose lives I will touch in Bangladesh.

I have also replaced my fundraising site with a Wordpress blogging engine that I will now use to post updates (hopefully once every two weeks or more as time allows).

Dhaka StorekeeperDhaka Storekeeper, October 2006.
After a fair amount of blood, sweat and tears (a bit of the first, lots of the second and a shed of the third) I have finally got my blog online and in what I will deem a usable form (ie it has to be well designed!). Best of all a small smattering of pictures are now online. Please have a look at the galleries while I now prepare something interesting to say about all these pictures and what my first nutty month in Dhaka has been like.

More to come soon!

Greetings from the air over Arctic Canada!

$4,116 raised
I hope this message finds you well. I’m currently on a British Airways flight flying over Hudson Bay on my way to London, where I will catch my onward flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh. I wanted to let you all know my fundraising was a big success, thanks to the support of so many people I’ve met over the years in my travels. In total, I raised over $4,116 Canadian dollars, a full $1,116 more than my goal.

I was simply blown away by that support, and once again I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and well wishes. As a result of the fundraising activities, I’ve raised $1,372 CAD for my volunteer sending organization (Voluntary Services Overseas Canada,, and I will be spending $1,372 CAD purchasing technology for a yet-to-be-determined organization in Bangladesh. The last third will be used to support me in future endeavours of the heart and soul.

For all those who donated/purchased, you should soon be receiving your packages in the mail. If there is any damage to the pictures or postcards please let me know and I’ll try my best to work out a solution from abroad. Hopefully all those pictures will make the journey safely, just like me!
